Ner Eyal - Samson Raphael Grunfeld
NER EYAL is a handbook that explains in simple language, the basic Talmudic and Halachic concepts of Shabbat, Yom Tov and other topics in Seder Moed.

Tracing these concepts back to their Torah origins, NER EYAL guides you through the debates in the Talmud and the Rishonim to the Halachic conclusions, while tying them to everyday examples from contemporary Responsa.

Whether you once learned these concepts, like Psik Reishe or Mitoch Shehutra Letzorech, in Yeshiva and forgot them or never had the opportunity to do so and want to catch up, this book summarizes 72 concepts each in single page bites allowing you to capture or recapture their essence on a train ride or in a study group.

Raphael Grunfeld, the author of Ner Eyal, is the son of the late Dayan Dr. I. Grunfeld of the London Beit Din, the author of The Sabbath, The Jewish Dietary Laws and The Jewish Laws of Inheritance, and translator of the works of Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch.

After studying Talmud at the Gateshead Yeshiva in England, Raphael received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the Tel-Aviv University and his Master of Laws degree from London University. He is a member of the Israel and New York Bars. Raphael practiced law in Israel for twelve years before moving to New York in 1985, where he is a partner in the Wall Street Law firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn. Raphael lives in Riverdale, New York, with his wife and two sons.

"As a lawyer, practicing for many years," says Raphael Grunfeld, "I found it a most challenging task to convey complex, legal concepts in simple language. Hiding behind legal terminology is a temptation to be avoided if you want to convey a clear message to your client.

Many people, otherwise capable of understanding Halachic concepts, are barred from doing so by the technical language in which Halachah is sometimes written.

Borrowing from the legal practice, it occurred to me that, perhaps, a key to  the understanding of Halachic concepts is to convey them in simple language while, at the same time, introducing their technical terms to the reader."

The topics included in this volume and in the upcoming volume of Ner Eyal on Seder Nashim are featured weekly on the OU Website (ou.org).
